Don’t let the enemy steal your joy…it’s not his to TAKE!

This might seem like an odd way to start out a blog post, however, this has been a common theme in my life, AND in the life of others! I’ve been a pastor’s wife for 16 years, an elementary public school teacher for the past 28 years, and a Sunday School/youth group teacher for 30 years, and I’ve seen many people in those realms of life have their joy stolen from them…but it made a difference when they WERE able to RECOGNIZE it!

I am most definitely writing from experience…I didn’t get married until I was 33 years old, and I was tired of seeing how the enemy tried to steal my joy and the joy of others in waiting FOR marriage…after marriage, we weren’t able to have any kiddos, but because I was now MORE conscious and ALERT of how the enemy tries to steal joy, I simply had to say, “If God chooses to give us kids, then great! And if He chooses NOT to, then great!” (Because they are ALL of His kiddos, anyway, right?!) And the list goes on and on and on…from having a small apartment for 10 years, to then getting an amazing parsonage/house to decorate…

Don’t Let Your Joy Be Taken From You: Upholding Happiness in Trying Times

Joy, in what we THINK is a sense of happiness and fulfillment, is one of the most cherished human emotions. It’s the spark that brightens our darkest days. However, various challenges and other circumstances often seem to threaten this precious “feeling”, making it appear very fragile. Despite these obstacles, I believe that TRUE joy, the kind that dwells deep within our souls and isn’t swayed by the shifting sands of our circumstances, can be protected and even nurtured.

The Foundation of Joy

So, I love flowers, especially tulips (hence the picture above) and the joy they bring, not just because of their vibrant color and their amazing smells, but because of their Creator who created them JUST FOR ME to enjoy!! But that kind of joy might be rather circumstantial, because what if those amazing flowers wilt and die? What if they get tossed by the wind or ruined in a torrential downpour? Is the joy of my CREATOR going to be taken from me OR is just the CREATION going to be taken from me? I’ve found that joy stems from knowing WHO Jesus is in MY life. At its core is my unwavering faith, a profound trust in God that anchors me in times of uncertainty or storms. It is not merely an emotion but a state of being that transcends all understanding.

A verse to remember: Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with ALL of your heart; do NOT depend on your own understanding. Seek HIS will in ALL you do, and He WILL show you which path to take.” You see, God calls us to TRUST in Him, He doesn’t tell us to understand what’s going on, because honestly where IS the trust in THAT? (That would mean that I STILL have a little control…and I do NOT want it!)

Love plays a pivotal role, acting as the wellspring from which joy overflows. It is in giving and receiving love that my heart experiences the FULLness of joy. The sacrificial and unconditional love of Jesus, serves as the ultimate example, in which HIS SPIRIT empowers me to help others..bringing TRUE joy.

The Holy Spirit is instrumental in nurturing the seeds of joy within me. By embracing His presence, I cultivate the fruits of the spirit outlined in Galatians 5:22-23, among which peace and goodness are integral to joy’s foundation, in addition to the greatest of ALL of these, which is LOVE. My life’s journey is enriched when I live in alignment with the glory of God. Remember, it’s ALL about Him, and NOT about ME!!! I love how John the Baptist said, “HE must increase, and I must decrease…” John 3:30

Overcoming Challenges to Joy

Maintaining joy often becomes a test of character as we navigate the complexities of life. The presence of negative influences and internal struggles can make it difficult to hold onto joy, but with intentional actions and divine assistance from the Holy Spirit, we CAN be overcomers!

And Of COURSE, I LOVE the song “Overcomer” by our dear Mandisa who is now with Jesus… FACE to FACE! ❤️ 🎶

…and if you haven’t seen one of my favorite movies, PLEASE check out the movie, “Overcomer”! This is SUCH an encouraging movie of perseverance, Faith, and never giving up! (With Priscilla Shirer and Alex Kendrick).

Frequently Asked Questions

In this section, I address common questions about maintaining joy as it’s taught in the Bible. These discussions help support the understanding that joy is a personal treasure that cannot be easily taken by external situations or individuals.

What does it mean when Scripture says ‘no one will take your joy away from you’?

22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.

This passage reassures us that spiritual joy, rooted in faith 🌳 and God’s promise, is enduring and beyond the reach of others’ actions or life circumstances. It is a joy that comes from a deep connection with the Holy Spirit, perceived as everlasting and unattackable by external forces. ⚔️ 🛡️ ❤️ (Meaning, the enemy can’t steal it, because it doesn’t BELONG to him!!)

How can one prevent others from stealing their joy according to biblical teachings?

Biblical teachings suggest that joy is maintained through trust in God’s plan and focusing on the eternal perspective rather than earthly troubles. By strengthening our relationship with God and staying true to our spiritual convictions, (Reminder: the Holy Spirit CONVICTS which helps us to GROW our spiritual muscles…the enemy condemns, which brings us shame and weakens us) we can preserve our joy even when faced with negative influences.

What is the message of John 16:22 regarding joy and overcoming sorrow?

John 16:22 implies that the joy given by Christ to His followers is truly unique—it transcends earthly challenges and sorrows. Once we embrace it, this joy acts as a buffer, enabling us as believers to overcome and exist above the griefs of the world. ❤️ 🙌

How can understanding the biblical perspective on joy affect one’s daily life?

Understanding biblical joy encourages me to prioritize my spiritual growth and well-being, leading to a life less shaken by everyday troubles. This perspective instils a resilient, contented spirit, one that finds comfort and strength within, regardless of external conditions.

…and just so you know, my tulips came up stronger than ever this spring, even in the midst of some of the harshest storms we’ve ever had! 😉

Hold on tightly to that joy that’s been given freely, my friends, and joyfully pass it on! 💜
